This is certainly one of those photos that just cannot do this place justice. Displaying the magnitude of Smith Rock in a single photo just can’t be done in my opinion. After getting home from a 10 day road trip to Oregon, I was quite eager to take a good look at the file of photos I took while on this location, and to my dismay I was actually quite dissapointed upon review. What I came to understand, it is simply one of those types of places that the sheer size just doesn’t translate into a photo well. Some places just need to be experienced to be appreciated, and I am ok with that.
In the shadows of Mount McDougal, puddles from melting snow form to ice overnight during autumn. The standing water beneath the ice has already receded into the ground below, leaving a thin veneer of crystallized ice that will soon melt away once the ground warms up. In the distance, Mount Kidd soaks up the morning sun.
Scouring through the Internet, you will find majority of photos from Peyto Lake quite repetitious. The photos are always shot from the Bow Summit parking lot in the same fashion. They are gorgeous photos, but overdone in my opinion. On this day I opted to be a bit different and not shoot the lake at all. Instead I shot the sun setting behind the mountains just above the lake. The suns rays shot across the landscape as the glacier-capped mountains received their last light of the day.
