I decided to drag my brother in law out on an early morning hike to take in a sunrise on top of a mountain in the Canadian Rockies. We were up at 12:30 am and on the road by 1:30 am. Our hike commenced by 3 am. Our flashlights were the only way we could navigate through the dense forest known for large volumes of grizzly bear activity. After we broke free from the forested portion of the trail, we still had to hike through a slog of an uphill scree slope. We made it to the summit with just moments to spare before the sun broke the horizon. I had just enough time to set up for this shot. Here, Steve soaks in the first light of the day looking to the east towards Calgary.
I was given permission from my wife to head up on a mini road trip up to Jasper, Alberta. I took full advantage of this opportunity. This shot was not planned at all. I was driving along highway 93 heading towards the Columbia ice fields and this image just popped right out at me.
I took my father in law on an epic adventure to his first ever summit. We started hiking before 3 am in hopes to witness a sunrise from the top. I think the hike almost killed the old man. I was absolutely blown away with the level of perseverance this man had. He struggled through every step from the midway point to the top. His body was not accustomed to hiking in thin air on steep slopes. He pushed through all of the pain just to see the sun rising from the top of the mountain.
